ACT Medical partners with CMS for global legal support
As with all startups, we at ACT Medical are extremely focussed on getting our device to market quickly and safely.
Our device has the potential to save lives around the world and we want to see that happen as soon as possible.
But we also know that we need to be responsible about how we get there.
It is essential that we have full regulatory compliance. That our development needs to be properly planned. And we know that we need to take great care around legal matters.
This is not just in terms of the usage of ACT Medical’s device. As a Med-Tech startup, we think deeply about legal application and ethical considerations.
But we also know that good advice around IP is crucial for a device such as REACT. We have learned that sound legal advice:
provides our organisation with competitive advantage
gives investors increased confidence in us
protects the trust building in our brand’s reputation - whether it be through us gaining Fellowship of the RSA or winning the International Dyson Award
Global interest in stopping bleeding from knife wounds
The international attention enjoyed by ACT Medical as an early stage student innovation was both a huge opportunity and a significant challenge.
As well as a huge amount of positive publicity we were sharing what was then a very early-stage idea across global media platforms including the BBC.
The experience focussed our minds on the importance of having quality legal support and protection as we developed and grew.
And that’s why it was so important to ACT Medical to be accepted onto the CMS equIP programme.
Protecting our medical device and its users
CMS lawyers work across sectors and borders in more than 40 countries worldwide.
The firm acts as legal adviser and business partner. Its focus is on helping founders mitigate risk and benefit to enable their organisations to thrive.
Having the support of CMS means we have access to a global network of corporate lawyers. Clearly, such expertise does not typically come cheap - and nor would we expect it to.
Therefore, it is hugely important to our development that being part of CMS equIP means that we benefit from reduced fees for three years.
Legal advice may often be pushed to the bottom of the priority list of early-stage businesses. That is natural at that stage but increases risk dramatically.
Supporting the response to knife crime
We are pleased to have CMS in our corner as they help ACT Medical to explore new markets, investigate laws and regulations in foreign jurisdictions, and protect our intellectual property.
Membership of the CMS equIP programme means we have access to support, legal advice, training, mentoring, and networking.
This matters because, at ACT Medical, we have always viewed what we do as having the potential for application around the world.
CMS is helping us to deliver that responsibly and effectively.
